Tension Spring Suppliers

A tension spring, also commonly known as an extension spring, is a type of helical spring designed to resist axial tensile forces. Its primary function is to operate under tension; when pulled apart from both ends, it exerts a counteracting force attempting to return to its original length.

How They Work:
In their free (unloaded) state, the coils of a tension spring are typically wound tightly together with no space between them. When an external force stretches the spring from both ends, it elongates and absorbs and stores energy (potential energy). Once the stretching force is removed or reduced, the spring releases this stored energy and uses its elasticity to return to its initial closed length, generating a retracting pull force.

Key Features:
Shape: Usually cylindrical.
Coils: Coils are closed and touching each other when the spring is at rest.
End Configurations: To facilitate the application of a pulling force, the ends are almost always fashioned into loops or hooks (e.g., full loop, half-loop, English loop, side hooks).

Common Applications:
Tension springs are widely used in applications that require a return pull, reset, or tensioning force, such as:
Everyday Items: Fitness equipment, garage doors, toys, clotheslines.
Industrial Fields: Return mechanisms in machinery, counterbalancing systems, tensioners in production lines.
Electronics: Washing machine lids, switch mechanisms.

Common Design Features of Tension Springs

Tension springs are designed to absorb and store energy when pulled or stretched. Several factors influence their design, and understanding these features is essential when choosing the appropriate spring for a given application. Below is a table summarizing the common design features of tension springs:

Design Feature

Description

Wire Material

Tension springs are often made of steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel, depending on their intended use and environment (e.g., corrosion resistance).

Spring Diameter

The diameter of the spring wire is a critical factor in determining the spring's strength and load capacity.

Coil Diameter

This refers to the spring's outer diameter and helps determine how much space the spring occupies when extended.

End Types

Common end types include hooks, loops, or machine eyes. The ends provide secure attachment points for machinery or equipment.

Spring Length

The spring's relaxed length is essential for fitting it into the intended application.

Load Capacity

The spring's load capacity is the maximum force it can withstand before permanently deforming.

Spring Rate (k)

The spring rate indicates the spring's stiffness, measured in force per unit of extension (e.g., N/mm). A higher rate means a stiffer spring.

Preload

Some tension springs are preloaded, meaning they are stretched slightly during manufacturing to enhance performance.

Corrosion Resistance

Depending on the material used, some tension springs are coated or treated to resist environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, or heat.

Is the Tension Coil Spring Easy to Install?

Tension coil springs can be somewhat straightforward to install, but their installation process does require attention to detail. There are a few key factors that affect how easy or difficult it is to install a tension coil spring. Below, we break down the main considerations for installation:

1. Preparation of Installation Space

Before installing a tension coil spring, ensure that the space where the spring will be fitted is clean, unobstructed, and large enough to accommodate the spring in both its compressed and extended forms. The clearance is important because a spring under tension requires space to expand without interference.

Measure the area's dimensions to ensure the spring fits comfortably. This includes checking both the spring's free length and its extended length.

2. Selecting the Right Spring

It's essential to choose a tension coil spring that matches the application's required load capacity, size, and material. Incorrect selection may result in spring failure or suboptimal performance.

If the spring is too strong, it may not stretch properly and could bring about premature wear. If it is too weak, it may not provide the necessary force. Therefore, an accurate understanding of the spring's role in the system is crucial.

3. Tools Required

To install a tension coil spring, you may need tools such as hooks, pliers, or a spring tool. These tools help securely attach the spring ends to the relevant parts of the system.

In some cases, a spring tension tool may be necessary to safely stretch the spring to its full length without damaging components or injuring the installer.

4. Safety Considerations

Since tension coil springs are designed to store energy, they can be dangerous when improperly installed. Always wear protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, to prevent injury.

Ensure the spring is not overstretched during installation. Overstretching can cause the spring to lose its functionality or break.

5. Attaching the Spring

Attach the spring's ends securely to the corresponding hooks, loops, or eyes in the system. If the spring is to be used in an application such as a door or garage door, ensure that the attachment points are stable and capable of bearing the spring's force.

In some cases, you might need to apply force or a load to stretch the spring into place, which will require additional tools or assistance from another person.

Characteristics and Advantages of Helical Tension Springs

Helical tension springs are a specific type of tension spring with a coiled design that allows them to stretch and store energy when pulled. These springs have unique characteristics that make them ideal for various mechanical applications. Below are some of the defining features and advantages of helical tension springs:

  • High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

Helical tension springs offer a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning they can withstand significant forces while remaining lightweight. This makes them ideal for applications where weight reduction is essential, such as in automotive or aerospace industries.

  • Durability and Reliability

These springs are built to handle cyclic loading, meaning they can endure repetitive stretching and compressing without losing their functionality. The design of the coil helps distribute forces evenly, reducing the risk of fatigue failure. This makes them suitable for long-term applications that require consistent performance.

  • Versatility in Applications

Helical tension springs are versatile and can be customized to fit a wide range of applications, from small consumer products to heavy-duty machinery. Their coil design allows them to adjust load capacity and length to meet the needs of the specific application.
