Spring Clip Manufacturers

"Flat spring" is a broad term referring to springs made from flat metal strips or sheets (as opposed to round wire). They are not a single type but a vast family with extremely diverse designs and functions. They are typically designed to provide pressure, tension, torque, or retention force within a specific path of motion or in a plane.

Core Characteristics:
Material Shape: Manufactured from flat metal material, which is the fundamental difference from round wire springs.
Space Utilization: Their shape can be custom-tailored to perfectly fit extremely limited or irregular installation spaces.
Functional Diversity: Capable of performing complex functions such as guiding, resetting, contacting, and cantilever support, often serving as multi-functional key components in machinery.

Main Types and Applications:
There is a wide variety of flat springs, including:
Motor Brush Springs: Installed in motors, using their spring force to maintain stable contact between the carbon brush and the commutator.
Constant Force Springs: Provide a nearly constant output force, commonly used in tape measures, seatbelt retractors, and fitness equipment counterweights.
Constant Torque Springs: Provide a nearly constant torque, often used in hinges, roller shutters, and cable rewinds.
Flat/Leaf Springs: The simplest form, commonly used in electrical switches, contacts, clutch discs, and simple cantilever mechanisms.

Spring Fasteners and Component Applications

Mechanical fastening systems encompass a wide variety of devices, each suited to specific functional requirements. Spring clips, flat springs, and wire-formed clips represent specialized categories within this field, distinguished by their reliance on elastic deformation to maintain clamping force.

Spring Clip versus Other Fasteners

Spring clips differ from conventional fasteners in their operating principle and installation method. Traditional fasteners such as screws, bolts, and rivets rely on positive mechanical locking through threads or deformation of the fastener itself. They typically require tools for installation and removal, and they maintain clamping force through rigid engagement with the joined materials.

Spring clips, by contrast, function through elastic deflection. They are designed to be pushed or snapped into position, where they exert continuous spring pressure against the mating components. This pressure creates frictional resistance and mechanical interference that holds the assembly together. Common examples include retaining rings, hose clamps, and push-on clips.

The advantage of spring clips lies in installation efficiency. They can often be assembled without tools, reducing labor time in high-volume manufacturing. They accommodate relative movement between components caused by thermal expansion or vibration, whereas rigid fasteners may loosen under such conditions. Spring clips also compensate for manufacturing tolerances, maintaining a consistent clamping force across variations in component dimensions.

However, spring clips have limitations compared to threaded fasteners. They provide lower clamping forces and are generally unsuitable for applications requiring high preload or precise torque control. They are more susceptible to fatigue failure over repeated installation cycles or under continuous dynamic loading. The choice between spring clips and conventional fasteners, therefore, depends on whether the application prioritizes assembly speed and vibration resistance or requires high clamping force and predictable removal torque.

Common Flat Springs and Flat Parts

Flat springs are manufactured from strip material rather than wire and derive their spring action from bending or deflection in a plane. Several configurations appear regularly in mechanical assemblies.

Cantilever flat springs consist of a strip fixed at one end with the free end deflected to provide force. These appear in electrical switches, where they maintain contact pressure, and in latching mechanisms, where they provide engagement force for removable covers.

Belleville washers, also called disc springs, are conical-shaped washers that deflect under axial load. They are used to maintain bolt tension in bolted joints subject to thermal cycling or vibration, and they can be stacked in series or parallel to achieve desired load-deflection characteristics.

Constant force springs differ from conventional springs by providing nearly uniform force throughout their deflection range. These consist of a prestressed strip of material wound onto a drum, and they appear in retractable cables, counterbalance mechanisms, and window counterweights.

Leaf springs, while historically associated with vehicle suspensions, also appear in smaller forms in industrial equipment. Multiple leaves stacked together provide progressive spring rates and are used where space limitations prevent coil spring installation.

Flat-formed parts that are not strictly springs but utilize spring-like properties include electrical contacts, terminal clips, and shielding gaskets. These components rely on elastic deflection to maintain electrical continuity or environmental sealing under dynamic conditions.

Materials Used in Metal and Wire Spring Clips

The selection of materials for spring clips depends on the mechanical requirements of the application and the environmental conditions the clip must withstand.

Carbon Spring Steels

Music wire and hard-drawn steel wire constitute the common materials for general-purpose spring clips. These materials offer tensile strengths ranging from 200,000 to 300,000 psi in drawn conditions, providing adequate spring force for interior applications. They receive protective coatings such as zinc plating or oil dip to prevent corrosion, as their base material has limited oxidation resistance.

Stainless Steels

Austenitic stainless steels, particularly types 302 and 316, are specified when corrosion resistance is required. Type 302 provides good formability and spring properties for applications exposed to moisture or mild chemicals. Type 316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride corrosion, making it suitable for marine environments or chemical processing equipment. These materials work-harden during forming, which enhances their final strength.

Copper-Based Alloys

Phosphor bronze and beryllium copper are selected for applications requiring electrical conductivity in addition to spring properties. Phosphor bronze provides a moderate spring force with corrosion resistance and is common in electrical connectors. Beryllium copper, while more expensive, offers spring properties approaching those of steel while maintaining high conductivity, making it the material of choice for critical electrical contacts and high-reliability applications.

High-Temperature Alloys

For applications involving elevated temperatures, such as automotive exhaust systems or industrial ovens, specialized alloys become necessary. Inconel and other nickel-based alloys maintain their spring properties at temperatures where conventional steels would relax or oxidize. These materials carry higher costs and are specified only when operating conditions exceed the capabilities of standard materials.

The material thickness, width, and heat treatment condition are specified alongside the alloy selection to achieve the required force-deflection characteristics. Manufacturers may apply additional surface treatments, such as passivation for stainless steel or proprietary lubricants, to facilitate installation, depending on the application requirements.
